The Christie is a Specialist Oncology Hospital based in South Manchester. The Christie specialises in surgery that is not routinely performed in other Trusts, including a number of regional, supra-regional and nationally commissioned surgeries and radiotherapy.

Number/names of sites that trainees might be expected to work at:

The Christie hospital Only. However, trainees are based at Wythenshawe Hospital and are allocated to the Wythenshawe on call rota. Trainees attend The Christies on their normal days. All anaesthetic work allocated would be on the main Christie site located in Withington.

Specialities Available:

An overview of the work undertaken includes:

Colorectal

  • Peritoneal Tumour Service – patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery & Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)
  • Advanced Rectal Tumour service – Multi-visceral, multi-speciality surgery (including colorectal, urology, gynaecology, plastics and Neurosurgery)
  • Neuroendocrine tumour surgery (carcinoid, phaeochromocytoma, paragangliomas)
  • Anal cancer

Urology

Retroperitoneal tumours (sarcoma and testicular tumours)

Penile cancer

Prostate and renal cancers

Gynae

All major gynaecology surgery including ovarian cytoreductive surgery & HIPEC; robotic surgery

Plastics

Skin cancers and reconstructive surgery

Clinical Oncology (Radiotherapy)

Anaesthetic services for paediatric patients receiving radiotherapy.  This includes working with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital at one of the 2 NHS high energy proton beam centres plus paediatric radiotherapy.

Pre-operative assessment

We run a consultant anaesthetist led pre-operative assessment clinic for the anaesthetic high-risk patient and a cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) service that trainees are very welcome to attend.

Modules that can be signed off include Stage 3 and SIA in both Major General Surgery and Perioperative Medicine.
